I was tired of seeing the quote ‘know your place, brother’ be used as an argument to say that Thor treated Loki like shit in the movie. In this scene we see the old arrogant Thor confront his enemies. He wants answers and he’s clearly angry. Notice that he was just humiliated in front of his brother and friends (which explains him being rude to Loki here, Thor doesn’t want to admit that Loki is right and that they are in fact outnumbered, it would mean admitting that he was wrong), but even after being humiliated and angry and frustrated he still listens to his brother and decides to give up. This is important, because this Thor is arrogant and reckless and he likes to court death, but in the end Loki’s words were more important to him than anything else [inspired by this].

No, scenes like that one (and others) were in fact there to make you think Thor is an asshole. You are supposed to see this scene and see that Thor is an asshole even to the people he loves best. Then later Thor is humbled and stops being an asshole and is a hero instead.

This is called “character development.” They could’ve started the movie with Thor as a hero and ended it with him as a hero, but they thought it would be more interesting this way. It’s actually the plot of the entire movie! If you missed it, try watching the movie again. You may see all sorts of other stuff you missed!

I’m sorry but I think you pissed the point? Yes, Thor at the beginning of the movie is arrogant, reckless, impulsive, vain and kind of a douchebag. No one here is saying he wasn’t all of those things. He not only wanted to go to Jotunheim cause he was pissed at the Frost Giants for daring to put their feet on Asgard but because he wanted them to fear him just as they once feared his father as well (Thor’s words). But it was never implied that he treated the ones he loves like shit… not on purpose, anyway. For example, look at this scene, at first he uses words that might be considered hurtful because he’s clearly not thinking, something that Thor used to do a lot. He wouldn’t think twice, he would just go and do it.

But then after Loki reasons with him Thor actually stops and thinks (a little too late). He gives up. Of course, later, they call him a princess and he’s acting on impulse all over again.

What I’m trying to say is that Thor used to behave in a way that was definitely not right, reasons Odin didn’t think he was ready to be a king. However it was never implied that he was an asshole to the people he loved simply because he was an asshole and that’s it, that’s who he is. He obviously cares about them, and they seem to be very fond of him too.

Those scenes are there so you can see how unready he was and how impulsive and reckless he used to be, how that’s so not the time for him to become a king. Of course he used to make asshole moves, but what are you trying to say exactly? That Thor treated the ones he loves like shit because he wanted to? If that’s the case, I would recommend you watch the movie again, maybe you missed something.

Because yes, while Thor was kind of a douchebag I honestly don’t think he didn’t care about his family and friends. He wouldn’t hurt them because he felt like it or because he wanted to, his impulsive and selfish behavior could end up hurting them as a consequence but yeah, Thor wasn’t thinking; as in, it’s not something he does intentionally.

That changes later because he learns to be humble and think about the consequences that his acts may unleash. The point of this gifset wasn’t even to erase Thor’s past behavior or even excuse it, it was to simply show that he cares about the ones he loves; that this one line (‘know your place’) shouldn’t be used as an excuse to build up a whole abusive scenario between him and Loki.

I’m sorry if you missed that, maybe you didn’t pay attention to the things written under the gifs? I never excused Thor’s actions. In fact, I even pointed them out.
